ATC5K helmet cam review - Chainbreaker

The keen eyed will have noticed we've a new video on our Vimeo page, taken with Dave's ATC5K helmet cam on Chainbreaker. It's Dave pursueing Jem who's on his VooDoo Wanga over a treacherous and leaf strewn hillside.

I was some way back, taking my time and saying over and over 'don't fall off!! don't fall off!!' It's becoming a mantra.

Actually, in part because I told Dave I was going to add this and in part because Mike from BrightonMTB has asked what we use I thought I'd just mention the helmet cam Dave was using is the Oregon Scientific ATC5K.

It's similar to the ATC2K he had previously but has improved quality and an LED screen on the back, meaning you have a much better chance of aiming it where you want it.

I'd recommend putting a mark on the cam which corresponds to a mark on the helmet so it's much easier to align in the future, once you have it lined up to your liking. Even with the screen it can be hit and miss as to where it's pointing if you don't. Most people will tend to have their head in roughly the same position when they're riding so once you find the sweet spot mark it!!

Usefully the cam has a remote which makes switching it on and off less of a faff too although Dave then had to rely on us to tell him if the green light was on! A design oversight perhaps…

Hopefully Dave will get some more footage over the coming weeks to judge the performance a bit better. With the screen you also have a chance to take some 'off the bike' hand-held shots too which then gives you then chance to be a bit more creative in terms of editting.
