I'm just about to buy a mountain bike for the first time. I would be interested in any advice about joining in some rides and how I should go about this. I'm a little bit worried about my inexperience and I might be a bit slow, would this be a problem.
Any advice would be most welcome.

Hi Paul,

Welcome.

Few things to consider.
1) Make sure the bike fits you and is suitable, i.e. not a BSO (Bike shaped object - sold in Halfords and Argos etc.)
2) Depending on how long it is since you rode it might be an idea just to ride some bridleways to get used to riding a bike again.
3) Consider some basic training with a local company like Astounding Adventures, they also show you round some of the best areas over at Leith Hill. As you progress you can consider more dedicated training if you feel there is any lack of skill/confidence holding you back.
4) Saturday rides with the Femoles are "generally" slower paced but they are also getting faster
5) As long as we know you are coming along we can generally accommodate your speed/skill. General fitness counts for a lot.
6) Use the forum to organise some more gentle rides. We have a Mole at the moment who is recovering from a long illness and might be interested in a some shorter rides. Moles in general might like a short evening ride this time of year anyway.

Lastly, as is listed all over the site and the forum, we are not a club, you are responsible for all riding and need to ride within your ability at all times. There's no shame in standing at the top of a tricky descent and deciding to walk down it or to take an easier route. Not trying to put you off, just having to accept the is a large part of society not into taking personal responsibility!

Thanks for your reply.
I've been into several bike shops and they recomended a specialised rockhopper.
I also went online and it seemed to have some good write ups.
I will take a look at outstanding adventures and go from their.
And hopefully in a few months will be able to join you for a ride.

kind regards

paul

Yes, a Rockhopper is a good choice as a first bike.

Well done for saying hello.

18 months ago I sent the same message!

18 months later I'm on my second bike (admittedly 4 times more expensive than the first!!). It's an awesome hobby and you have to accept that unless you weigh 10 stone and are fit its gonna be hard work!!

You'll blow like you're missing a lung. I still do but yesterday I attempted a 100 mile ride and managed 60. Very happy so give it a go, realise you may spend more than you thought you might (*Moles laughing*)

Enjoy

LOL Andy. I don't ever want to calculate how much I've spent on bikes & associated kit

Worth every penny though :)

Start at where you're comfortable, Paul, and just enjoy it !
