When going somewhere new, apart from using google, I use these two sites for off road map planning:

http://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/maps/ - is good for a full screen OS map
http://www.bikehike.co.uk/mapview.php - is good for editing and creating routes (as well as giving optional map views like OS and google maps side by side.

The other thing that comes to mind for that part of the world is Offa's Dyke, I have no idea whether or where you can cycle it.
