Hello all, firstly I’ll try not to badger you all with 10 posts asking for a response… ;)

Secondly, I’m new to off roading/mountain biking etc so you’ll have to excuse my terminology. Anyway, I bought a bike with a view to riding it to work occasionally but using it more for taking it out and getting it dirty at the weekends. Needless to say I have fallen victim to using a mountain bike as a road bike and its been 8 months now and I only ride it to work and back once or twice a week. So… I was just wondering if there were any reasonably easy rides that you could suggest that I could just drive up to, get the bike out, have a little potter around and get my bearings before taking the next step of maybe joining up with a club or something. I’m of reasonable fitness but of course I guess that counts for nothing when trying to bike up a hill with a loose surface under the wheels. I’m on the inside of the M25 close to Sutton and have heard a fair bit about Box Hill and after an internet search, that led me here.

Anyway – any advice pointers etc would be most appreciated.
Aaron

Hi Aaron, welcome aboard.

We have people who ride with us of all abilities and experience. There's tons of decent riding across the North Downs and around the focal points of Leith, Holmbury and Pitch Hill. Much of it is general trail riding but there is also a lot of quite technical riding too.

Some of the less taxing riding if you're starting out can be had heading from Bookham toward the Reigate area, through Epsom Downs and Tadworth. We often have rides that cover this so keep an eye on the forum and come along. We don't generally leave slower riders except by mistake (!?) and can show you some nice routes.

Our rides tend to be Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings (but you'll need decent lights for that). Riders are often out in smaller groups too, so ask on the forum and maybe people can meet up.

Bear in mind though that ALL RIDING IS AT YOUR OWN RISK. We're not a club and don't charge fees, just a bunch to people roughly riding in the same direction at the roughly the same time.

You'll find you also get a lot of advice and tips for better or worse! And if people don't respond straight away don't worry, it's because we're all pretending to work ;)

Aaron, if you just want a potter around at first then I would suggest you get the Dorking 1:25000 OS map number 146. Park up in the car park at the bottom of Box Hill opposite the Burford Bridge Hotel. There are a wealth of bridleways you can then easily follow to make a circulate route from there - either up Box Hill, and down Juniper Bottom, around Norbury Park, through Denbies and up to Ranmore or even as far afield as Polesden Lacey or Headely. These will all give a bit of climbing which for some is a fact of life in the Surrey Hills, and for others of us is one of the delights, but will certianly boost your fitness very quickly.

If you want something a bit more structured and can tell me how far you want to go I can make up one or two suggstions on an OS map and email it to you - contact me using the Message system link at the top of the forum page and tell me your email - I am MuddyJohn. (Click on the bit that says 0 new messasges).

Many thanks for that Matt/John,
I've been away with work so great to have some advice and tips to come back to. Will hopefully head out over the weekend and try not to get too lost... but then again, that must be part of the fun!
thanks again
