Excuse my ramblings,...usually I enjoy the countryside but this month night riders really should look up at the night skies on clear nights. Being aware that March was a unique month, astronomically, I have noticed when out and about that the night views have been amazing

This evening, looking west (I think) at about 9pm Orion, Moon, Venus & Jupiter were shining brightly and pretty close together - quite a splendid sight. Mars was also easily visible high in the south? sky. Mercury can also been seen if you know when and where to look.

I am now inspired to do a local ride tomorrow evening.

Hi

I'm not sure how much element braving will be required tonight! I'll be there.

Steve I know what you mean. Some beautiful clear skies and sights this month.

Alas, commute to work today but not around for a night ride. Enjoy the conditions.

Steven I know exactly what you mean and have done my best to point sky bits out to people on our rides. Last night was awesome as you say with Jupiter, Venus, Orion and Moon all in the same view in the lower third of the sky looking toward the south/south west.

Not sure I'd be able to recognise Mercury or Mars though, I'm no expert at this sort of thing. The sky is crystal clear at the moment and in Surrey many of the streetlamps are now non-sodium, bright white and more directional, so there's a lot less light pollution.

I am going to try get out tonight (50:50), if I do I will reduce the average speed by at least half.

We should think of a handicapping system or simply have Danny drag a big weight behind him (like me for instance!)

Mars is a orangy/brown coloured star SE/S and high in the sky, quite easy to spot. btw reading the forum I got the impression you were main source of light pollution on night rides.

P.S My interest in all this came about because of the publicity around 'six planets in the sky' earlier in the month.
