Muddymoles mountain biking in the Surrey Hills and Mole Valley

It’s not mountain biking

Today I had to take a trip into town for a mid-morning London meeting. Staring idly out of the window as the train crossed the Thames I was suddenly struck by a rather interesting thought.

Wouldn’t it be a great idea for the moles to take a trip down the river Jerome K Jerome style? This time, instead of employing a boat we could make good use of the towpath to follow the Thames into town, and being somewhat less ambitious we could try starting from Kingston and do the whole round trip in a day instead of tempting fate and challenging friendships with a multi day affair.

I’ve no idea of the distance or the logistics of the route (is it one towpath on one side, does it alternate between banks or are there sections where the road is the only option?) but I just thought it would make a change. I’m guessing it would be relatively easy on the legs but varied in terms of sights and sounds so it would be worth taking the camera to record our progress.

Anyway, watch this space – I think I could be onto something and inevitably, there’d be a pub at the end of it.

About the author

Matt is one of the founding Molefathers of the Muddymoles, and is the designer and main administrator of the website.

Having ridden a 2007 Orange Five for many years then a 2016 YT Industries Jeffsy 29er, he now rocks a Bird Aether 9 and a Pace RC-627.

An early On-One Inbred still lurks in the back of the stable as a reminder of how things have moved on. You can even find him on road bikes - currently a 2019 Cannondale Topstone 105 SE, a much-used 2011 Specialized Secteur and very niche belt drive Trek District 1.

If you've ever wondered how we got into mountain biking and how the MuddyMoles started, well wonder no more.

    Venturing beyond the Surrey Hills

This year, for the first time, we’re starting to look at riding beyond the confines of the Surrey Hills. Largely as the result of an unhappy combination of too little time, too little money, young kids and unsympathetic spouses we…

    Bedgebury postponed, Afan looming

A while back I posted about our plans to try a few different things this year and stretch out beyond the Surrey Hills. In typical fashion, we’ve hit a metaphorical bump in the trail before we’ve even started. As others…
